ADF's make great aquarium pets, but fish aquariums are not always great for ADF's. We'll give you the info you won't get from aquarium experts, who know tropical fish, but little about these frogs..............

A World Unto Thier Own

We get questions from time to time, asking why we advise against keeping fish & frogs together in a standard Aquarium setting. While African Dwarf Frogs are a popular addition to freshwater aquariums, it's not always a good thing for either the fish, or the frogs.

Too often, the choices of what species are together in a tank, is determined by owners preferences, often whether a fish is pretty or cute or even how "happy" a critter seems when seen in a pet
Oooo! There's one that matches the wall paint!
shop tank.
Unfortunately, a tank owners personal preferences is the WORST yardstick to use. The compatibility of different species should ALWAYS be considered over anything else. Always consider the type of fish species indigenous to the natural habitat of the frog... In other words, if you have African Dwarf Frogs, ALWAYS choose the species of tropical fish that are also indigenous to West African rain forests over all others.  Why?

Because eons of evolution has naturally selected fish & frog species to tolerate diseases carried by each species, who have evolved together in the same regional environment. A frog evolved in West African Rain forests, may not have tolerances of disease vectors carried by tropical fish from South East Asia or elsewhere.
Hey! This oriental food is pretty tasty!
Equally important, is natural behavioral traits of each species, imprinted by location and circumstance, which are now instinctive.  While species may have naturally tolerant behavior regardless of where it evolved, some may have behaviors that will clash or compete with a foreign species, all because of where each species evolved from, and the environment each evolved in.

Regardless if animals are bred in captivity or in the wild, evolutionary behaviors & physical tolerances do not radically change. Disease susceptibilities within a species still reside, whether bred in the wild or in captivity,  & there are cases where the presence of a foreign species can actually create susceptibilities which would normally not be present.

Bloat, (Dropsy) is a good example.  There's still no conclusive reason why ADF's lymph nodes are triggered to overproduce lymph fluid. Some suspect a reaction to a common bacterium, often found within the skin layer of tubal worms, like blood worms. Yet exposure to this bacteria in nature seldom shows ill effects. Bloat is not a common disease in nature, not near as common as it is in aquariums. However, there's evidence that ADF's sharing an aquarium habitat with fish, have a higher susceptibility rate than do ADF's who do not. One conclusion would be that something common with some fish species may tie in with exposure to the bacterium, which normally would not pose a problem, since intermingling to such species would never happen in the wild.  Another conclusion may be environmental factors, common within a fish friendly habitat, such as higher dissolved oxygen content in the water, can cause abnormal susceptibilities in African Dwarf Frogs, or a more tolerable environment for the bacterium to thrive & concentrate.
Remember, frogs can coexist with fish in an environment tolerable for fish, yet in a natural environment of extreme acidic, nitrate high, & low oxygenated water, fish are not a common species to co-exist with these frogs. Most fish cannot tolerate water conditions these frogs would call home. It's entirely the reason that in a more pristine aquatic world of a freshwater aquarium, species of fish & frogs which naturally never be together do intermingle, and present possibilities that never would happen in the wild.
These are the reasons we run contrary to conventional wisdom, and advise keeping fish & frogs separate in a aquarium environment. Doing so allows maintaining a tank ecology most suited to the needs of a species, while keeping the likelihood of cross species contamination & behavior conflicts totally eliminated.

Fuzzy Green Balls of Algae under Scrutiny

Recently on our Facebook Page, Carrie Ann Durkin Pitts posed a question which started us on a path of research.  A path which may lead to a new product offering.
We're currently testing a form of Algae which may offer a method of keeping other forms of Algae at bay in our EcoAquariums.

Carrie asked us if Marimo Ball "Moss" can be added in our EcoAquarium. Marimo Balls are a form of slow-growing Algae, popular as an plant addition in fresh-water aquariums. In reaching an answer for her, she peaked or interest in the funny, furry, unique plant.
As far as it's compatibility, since Marimo (Aegagropila linnaei) is a form of freshwater algae, it poses no direct threat to bottom-dwelling African Dwarf Frogs, and the frogs seem to pose no threat to the plant. (Frogs are not algae eaters) But what has interested us most is how the Marimo aids greatly in consuming nitrates in the water, effectively reducing the food source to other, more fast-growing algae commonly found in all aquariums, including our EcoAquariums.

We're currently testing several EcoAquariums with Marimo Balls in our office, each under different lighting conditions and plant/frog configurations, monitoring water quality over time. If this turns out favorable, it's possible we may consider Marimo Ball Algae as a plant to offer in future EcoAquariums. Stay tuned!

BTW: If you have included Marimo Balls in your EcoAquariums, or in any standard aquarium, we'd appreciate your comments & observations.

Sun setting on a classic design

Bamboo Watergarden
An EcoAquarium design that served as a foundation product for us from the beginning had been the Bamboo Watergarden.  With it's distinctive shape, and vase insert, the Watergarden was a stunning and unique product, set apart from our Classic & Jewel EcoAquarium designs.   However, it's place in the line-up came to an end late 2009 when manufacturing ceased on the signature keystone shaped tank.

However, late last year, we uncovered more tanks in our warehouse. Five hundred of the tapered keystone-shaped tanks quickly became available as the Keystone Classic. It's been a year, and now we're down to only 80 tanks left. Soon, they'll be all gone, and that'll be it for our most unique EcoAquarium.  With the holidays coming up, and if you're looking for that one-of-a-kind gift idea, naturally we can't think of anything more unique than an EcoAquarium. But add to that, a EcoAquarium, in a special tank, never be available again...well, to us, that's a very, very, special holiday gift indeed!  The Keystone Classic is offered in limited supply complete, and as a "Builders Series" Kit, (everything but frogs).

New Products from Customer Requests & a Happy Discovery

Adding to our EcoAquarium Accessories are three items that we're sure will create a buzz. Introducing the EcoAquarium™ Builders Series.

After requests by our customers, we've responded by offering our popular EcoAquariums in kit form with everything EXCEPT FROGS!

We've had calls from customers wanting a second tank, or to replace a cracked tank (BAD DOG!). Now there's a easy solution with our Builder's Series. Tanks, rocks, living & decorative gravel, & Lucky Bamboo....all ready to go. Just add water and your favorite critter.

Also, for a limited time, we're offering a "new" tank... "The Keystone Classic". Up until late last year, we offered our Watergarden EcoAquarium with it's distinctive tapered tank and large Lucky Bamboo stems in a tall chimney vase. It was a popular item which sadly had to be discontinued when we ran out of the distinctive keystone-shaped tank.
Fortunately, while rearanging our warehouse, we've uncovered a box of these tanks which had been misplaced and mislabled. A very limited supply, so while they last, we will be offering our Keystone Classic, in our Builders Series. If you missed out and didn't get a Watergarden, here's your chance on getting what may be one of our most sought after EcoAquariums.

A whole world on your desk...

Ecosystem: the complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit.- Webster’s Dictionary.

Because it is able to conveniently fit on a table or desk, you may find it difficult to believe that there is much to the Wild Creations EcoAquarium™, but inside each is a world unto itself. More than just gravel, plant, and frogs, its balanced ecosystem habitat offers a bit of nature and science at your fingertips.

Years of study and research are behind each ecosystem habitat, and each aquarium component serves a very specific and vital role. For beginners, you may think the plant inside each aquarium is just bamboo … but think again. It’s actually “Lucky Bamboo”, or Dracaena Sanderiana. This hardy plant, like the African dwarf frogs swimming around it, is from the rainforests of West Africa. It thrives on very wet and low light conditions, which is why it works so well in each aquarium. Next, the brown gravel, or Living Gravel™, which you will find at the bottom of each aquarium, serves as a natural, biological filter, converting toxins in the water to valuable nutrients utilized by other components of the habit. Lastly, the ecosystem wouldn’t be complete without the frogs, which contribute to the ecosystem much the way we do to ours.

How does a frog thrive in this ecosystem? For African dwarf frogs, shallow puddles and streams of water are their home. This is why the comfortable habitat of the EcoAquarium makes such a great home for them. These tiny frogs, much like us, enjoy the quiet luxuries of a safe, predator- and hazard-free home, with all the amenities of their own natural habitat.

How does the ecosystem work without a pump or aquarium filter? Well, quite simply because there IS a filter inside every EcoAquarium. As mentioned before, the brown Living Gravel is literally a biological filter, home to MILLIONS of beneficial anaerobic bacteria, eating waste and providing food for the other components of the aquarium.

The beauty of the cycle of life, often reflected as an ecosystem, is that it can be as all-encompassing as the world itself or as big as a space that can sit on a tabletop.
